I am often very busy but like to take the time to make myself some meals with plenty of chopped vegetables and extras like feta, kalamata olives, peperoncinis, artichoke hearts, etc. But it was getting pretty ridiculous - every time I wanted a breakfast scramble or a spicy stir-fry, I would end up taking out four bags of vegetables (I chop them on weekends) and five jars of other ingredients. I spent more time opening jars and bags than actually cooking my meal. In short, I needed a compartmentalized air-tight container to keep in the fridge. Seeing how useful this would be for me, I thought it would be a quick find... I was wrong.
I spent the better part of a week looking for this item. I went first to Amazon, then to Macy's, Bed Bath and Beyond, William Sonoma and many other little kitchen stores before someone suggested I look at Lock and Lock's website and search their product catalog. Lo and behold, there was my holy grail of kitchen containers. And when I went back to Amazon using the product number, it had been there all along, just last on all the searches and without a picture or review.
The item:
This little item is great. Let me start with a better product description than the page gives. It measures 11.5" in length, 6" in width, and 4.5" in height. It is not higher than it is wide as it appears in the picture. The lid is the standard Lock and Lock airtight lid and works great, neatly fitting on the entire container. As for the body, it is divided into 3 removable compartments that can be taken out and used as a little serving dish if desired. The three compartments are not able to mix, except that the lid does not seal over the top of each compartment separately (which also means that you only open one lid to access three ingredients). So this is probably not a good option for liquids. If you put three liquids in each container, put on the lid, and turned it upside down, nothing would come out, but the three liquids would start to mix together and get into the cracks between the compartments. The compartments are pretty good sized: one held four chopped bell peppers.
Uses: if you ever chop up your vegetables for later use in stir-fries, scrambles, salads, etc, you will love this. It would also be a great way to serve three different kinds of dips and easily store the extra (imagine: guacamole, salsa, and bean dip in the three compartments, you'd have an always-ready party platter). It could keep a multi-dished leftovers pretty well too, each dish in its own compartment, just pop it in the microwave and no hassling with multiple storage containers. There are probably many others, use your imagination!
Limits: Don't use with liquids. It would be difficult to keep this stocked for a family of 4 if you wanted to use it for an ingredient tray.
Bottom Line: it's the same quality Lock and Lock product but with the specifications I mentioned above, I LOVE it. Think about it, you might just love it too.
