Follow these few simple hints to ensure that your fine stainless steel flatware lasts for many years: Wash flatware prior to using for the first time. Avoid soaking stainless flatware in water for a prolonged period of time or overnight Before placing in washer, rinse food from flatware When loading your dishwasher, make sure knife blades do not come into contact with other utensils. This will prevent blades from nicking or scratching other pieces. Use a mild non-chloride detergent.Never pour detergent directly onto flatware.In hard water areas, use a water-softening agent to avoid spotting or pitting. Always remove stainless flatware from the dishwasher shortly after the drying cycle is complete. This decreases the amount of time your flatware is exposed to a very moist and hot environment and allows it to dry in cool drier air. Should detergent film build up on your flatware, wash (either by hand or in a dishwasher) and hand-dry to remove film. Ginkgo Varberg 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4 Review

(More customer reviews)The first thing that impressed me about the Varberg stemware is the weight - it's solid and heavy in the hand. You'll also notice that the bowls on the spoons are a squared-off oval shape and the fork tines are longer and sleeker than usual. As a result, these pieces have a nice mouth-feel. These two unique design elements (combined with the high-polish finish) make this stemware look elegant, very classy and very expensive. They are appropriate for everyday use as well as when you want to set an elegant table.
Care: these are dishwasher safe but, as with all stainless, do not use a citrus dishwasher detergent or combine with silver or aluminum items. Also, you may see some scratches depending on your normal use (we tend to cut our meat by using a knife against the back of fork and have begun to see small scratches there from the knife blade). The Ginkgo website has a lot of useful tips on caring for stainless stemware.
Overall, I could not be happier with this product. The pattern is not that easy to find - other than Ginkgo's website, only a few retailers carry it - so if you see it, grab it!

(More customer reviews)My order just arrived today, 12/26/07 and the steel was 18/0 - NOT 18/8.The difference is huge, the /8 means 8% nickel, which improves the finish, but more importantly gives stainless dishware its corrosion resistance.18/0 will corrode in the dishwasher rapidly, 18/8 or /10 will last many many years.If you aren't sure what you have, 18/0 is magnetic, 18/8 or 18/10 aren't.

(More customer reviews)It's sad.There was a time when Oneida meant quality.Those days are gone--now Oneida is just a nameplate, and its products are manufactured in generic, no name factories in China just like the X brand junk you can get at any budget store.

This set is low quality.The pieces are made from very heavy steel.Why?Because the steel they use is 18/0 stainless, the lowest quality stainless you can get.They have to make the pieces thick or they'll bend.Compare that to my 10 year old Oneida set, made from 18/8 stainless.They're thin and light as a feather because it's high quality steel.

Also, they include an insert in the packaging to tell you not to use these with acidic foods and that they must be washed right away to prevent damage.Why?Because low quality 18/0 stainless will be etched by food, but higher quality stainless (18/8) will not.In other words, don't fall for the hype.If it's cheap junk you want, buy a cheap junk brand and pay a cheap junk price.If you want quality, don't buy Oneida.

(More customer reviews)The Sand Dune series is one of the most elegant flatware services available. Easily found in many retail stores, its success is perhaps due to the sweeping line inside the form of the handles that makes gripping easy and graceful, and the heft that's actually provided.
The weight provides a good lever for cutting (for the knives) and stabbing with the fork. This is not a series so light and hollow that the utensils will fly from a hand, or cause you to press with wrist and hand so hard as to cause ache. The utensils seem to help you move through a meal.
They are lovely at an elegant table, but also at home with your everyday dinners. I've purchased two 8-place settings for myself, plus found the serving utenils at a local outlet mall. The large serving spoons and serving forks (great with carving) are very hard to find and many places will not have them in any open stock. If you ever see the serving utensils, grab them.
My mother-in-law from Australia liked Sand Dune so much when she visited, she asked me to take her to purchase her own sets. She bought enough for 8 places and took them back to Australia.
Sand Dune has been one of my best table purchases.

But the main point of my posting is to help people understand all the issues about stainless steel rusting or not rusting.This is a great FAQ from Specialty Steel Industry of North America. ([...]):

1. What makes stainless steel stainless?

Answer: Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 % chromium. It is this element that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a complex chrome-oxide surface layer that is invisible but strong enough to prevent further oxygen from "staining" (rusting) the surface. Higher levels of chromium and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance this surface layer and improve the corrosion resistance of the stainless material. See the "Stainless Steel Primer" for more information.

2. What is the difference between 18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel?

Answer: The first number is the amount of chromium that is contained in the stainless, i.e., 18 is 18% chromium. The second number is the amount of nickel, i.e., 8 stands for 8% nickel. So 18/8 means that this stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 18/10 is 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The higher the numbers the more corrosion resistant the material. 18/0 is a misleading designation. Both 18/8 and 18/10 contain nickel and are part of the grade family "300 series" stainless. 18/0 means that there is 18% chromium but zero nickel. When there is no nickel the stainless grade family is the "400 series". 400 series are not as corrosion resistant as the 300 series and are magnetic, where the 300 series are non-magnetic.

3. Can stainless steel rust? Why? (I thought stainless did not rust!)

Answer: Stainless does not "rust" as you think of regular steel rusting with a red oxide on the surface that flakes off. If you see red rust it is probably due to some iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and it is these iron particles that are rusting. Look at the source of the rusting and see if you can remove it from the surface. If the iron is embedded in the surface, you can try a solution of 10% nitric and 2% hydrofluoric acid at room temperature or slightly heated. Wash area well with lots and lots of water after use. Commercially available "pickling paste" can also be used. See "The Care and Cleaning of Stainless Steel" for more information.
