(More customer reviews)It seems I've spent years trying to find the "perfect" teakettle. Something that would give an good honest, audible whistle when boiling, then allow one to pour the steaming hot water without having to put a hand anywhere near the spout.
That didn't seem like much to ask, but we had a heck of a time finding such a thing. We found some that were close, but which you can fill only through the spout. It seems to me that one should have a lid on a pot like this, to be able to get inside and clean it, inspect for damage or wear, or whatever.
And suddenly, we came across this one. On Amazon there was a 4-cup version, and two 8-cup versions. There is one with a copper bottom to resemble the traditional Revereware look, but after looking at the pictures, we bought the one that is pure stainless steel top to bottom.
The entire top of the pot is a non-shiny plastic of some kind -- one of those new space-age materials that does not get as hot as metal or some other materials. The designers at Revere should be commended for making a total break with tradition so they could create a pot that is so practical. The lid on top is not centered beneath the handle, which means you can reach inside, or fill it, more easily than in the typical pot where the handle gets in the way.
The handle is very well balanced and the "trigger" to open the spout is well-positioned. You can hold the spout partly open, or pull it completely open, at which point the trigger "locks" it in the open position. This saves a lot of finger fatigue when pouring multiple cups of tea, or whatever.
To close it, one simply pushes forward on the back of the trigger. You don't need the instructions, although they are included. When you pick this thing up to pour with it, it feels totally natural in your hand, and you figure it out instinctively. It's great.
The spout has a slight diagonal "crease" in its tip for drip-free pouring, which is just another thoughtful feature in an overall thoughtful and original design.
We chose the larger size mostly to be able to serve more than a couple of people at a time if we should have company. And we're glad we made that choice, because honestly the 8-cup version looks small compared to our old kettle. The other one was more rounded and perhaps a larger capacity. I haven't measured the capacity of the Revere model, as I'm not that obsessed with it, and I'm sure it will suit our needs. I suspect that the compact appearance is most likely a function of efficient design.
This is one of those purchases that, in its own small way, makes every day better by improving a small task that one does frequently. Of course it's far too early to tell how it will stand up to long use, but we're quite satisfied with ours and expect it to be a pleasure for a long time.
