(More customer reviews)After two plus decades, I finally decided to replace my wood utensils.Though they had served me well, they were now cracked and splintering.

I was considering nylon or silicone utensils to replace them, but about the same time, I had purchased a bamboo cutting board and really loved it. So I checked out bamboo utensils and found these very nice and reasonably priced tools.

First, they are great with all types of cookware, whether traditional or nonstick.And the burnished bamboo surface is very tough.It doesn't mind high heat or the dishwasher.

I also like the bamboo container.It's small enough to place anywhere in the kitchen.I have on set by the stove and another on my prep table.

The only thing I wish it had was a deeper spoon or ladle for serving.

(More customer reviews)My inlaws got these for us because Consumer Reports gave them an excellent rating.We liked the weight and overall quality, and loved the fact that they were made without hazardous chemicals.However, after less than 1 month of proper use, the smallest fry pan had lost its nonstick quality and the next size up was wearing too.We returned the pans and got the similarly priced Rachel Ray set instead.It's been 6 months and the Rachel Ray pans are still in perfect condition.

(More customer reviews)I grew up on non-stick pans...teflon that is...and I even remember them little black flakes mixed in with my scrambled eggs.I simply ate it back then along with my siblings cuz none of us knew any better.We are now much better informed and having my own kids I'm very careful with knowing how food gets to our table and also how it gets prepared.I own everything from Lodge cast iron pots, pans and ovens to Calphalon, Cuisinart and other semi-high level cookware but as of late was browsing the market to see if any safer non-stick pans were around.That's when I discovered these Safepans.At first skeptical, I decided to give the US FDA approval the benefit of the doubt.I have now used these pans daily for the past 2 months and am pleasantly surprised.The non-stick works great like it should but it's the peace of mind in knowing that there are no toxic fumes & substance getting into the food and into my children that make these pans all worthwhile.I rarely take out my cast iron cookware these days and even my Calphalon gets a break unless I have company over and I run out of pans. If there is one shortcoming it's the design of the handles.They feel a little cheap but the rest of the pan is solid and performs like it should.Highly recommeded for the health conscious and children.

Starfrit Alternative Eco Pan 9-Piece Set in Reusable Storage Box Review

(More customer reviews)The smooth ceramic performs surprisingly well. You can't really fry an egg on it without oil, but it is more non-stick and easier to clean than hard anodized surfaces like Calphalon. I've now switched to Starfrit when boiling bones for stock because the froth leaves a ring on my stainless pots that is impossible to remove. I even deep fry in the sauce pot because oil splatter comes right off. It's nice that the coating extends to the outside (but not bottom) of each pan or pot.

Build quality is acceptable but not great--comparable to entry level non-stick offerings. The glass lids even look like they came from the same factory. Both the pan and lid handles are attached by Philips head screws which came loose after the first week's use. :(

The degree of the "Eco-friendly" and "better for the environment" claims is questionable. The application of conventional teflon non-stick to cookware is probably not great for the environment, but I rather doubt the application of this ceramic coating is pollution-free either.The use of "99% recycled aluminium" is probably behind those claims. But why the set ships in a plastic tote is beyond me. Would anyone store their cookware in it?

I can believe that ceramic is more inert than teflon, and that it is "better ... for your health", especially at the higher temperatures required for frying.However, there is no information about what kind of ceramic is used, or that is in fact safer, so you have to take it on good faith.

All in all a good second set of cookware especially if you believe teflon is carcinogenic. I would not use the Starfrit when thermal performance is critical, e.g. searing, because the pans are on the light side. 3.5 stars.

6 MONTH UPDATE
There is a chip in the center of the small frying pan revealing the aluminum despite careful use, i.e. no metal utensils and hand washing only. Who wants their food to be touching recycled aluminum? On closer examination, the ceramic finish of the larger frying pan looks like it was fixed by hand because you can see what looks like circular brush marks. The others in the set are perfectly smooth. Non-stick performance on all still pretty good (about 75% compared to brand new) but discovered that grease splatter from frying does not wash off internal walls so easily and requires some scrubbing to remove. Downgrade to 3 stars.

(More customer reviews)I bought this cookware set because they were Ecolution, and the color green was what I wanted.I used them twice and the coating on the bottoms of the pans are chipping off.I don't know if this will interfere with how they cook, but I did not expect that this would happen after only using a couple of times!I just missed the deadline to return them by a couple of weeks, so unless I want to only receive a minimal amount of the purchase price, plus the cost for return shipping, I will just chalk it up as a "poor selection", and purchase another set.

(More customer reviews)We have now been using this set for 6 months.When we first received and began using them, the pans were perfectly nonstick so that food including eggs could be cooked without any oil, and cleaning was fast and easy.Unfortunately this is no longer true -- the pan we've used most often now requires oil in order than food doesn't stick, despite hand-washing and following the manufacturer's other directions.If no oil is used, the pan is like a traditional pan and not only does food stick, but the pan requires prolonged soaking and scrubbing to get it clean.You must also be careful not to stack the pans (chipping and scratching).

The pan handles do not get hot, but the lid handles do, so be prepared to use a potholder to move the lids.

The set must be hand-washed and handled carefully to avoid chipping, but this is not a problem for us.

I would have rated the set 5 stars had it retained its nonstick performance.The loss of the nonstick capacity and the subsequent difficulty with cleaning the pans drops my rating to two stars.

1/3/10 Edited to add:We've now been using this set for a year and I've noticed several minute to small chips out of the cooking surfaces of more that half the pieces.We do not use metal utensils (silicon only) and are careful with cleaning and storing.One piece has also absorbed the smell of the food that was cooked in it.I am now looking for a different set of cookware, and regret buying this one.While I prefer a "green," eco-friendly product, I think this one needs some improvements in quality and design.

(More customer reviews)This set is the most amazing one I have worked with.I have used various other nonstick pans, stainless steel, cast iron... and i prefer these pans over all.One thing to note is that the nonstick surface scratches right off of these pans if you use any kind of metal.As the pans have exposed metal on them it is not a good idea to stack them on top of each other or to let pile up in the sink.This has not at all been a problem for me because the cleanup on these pans is super fast.Get yourself a set of bamboo kitchen utensils in addition to this set and your in business for some eco-friendly low toxicity cooking.
