Calphalon Katana 5-Inch Nakiri Knife Review

(More customer reviews)I found this knife while browsing on the Amazon site. I have yet to see any reference to a 5" Katana nakiri knife on the Calphalon site. This is maybe my sixth Katana knife, and I really love each of them. I have not had any of the rusting problems mentioned in several reviews. The knives out of the box are the sharpest I have seen. I really like the balance and the wide tapered bolster, which helps remind the user to grip these knives properly. I generally clean my knives fairly shortly after use, but it seems that is the best way to care for good cookware and cutlery. The size and balance of this smaller nakiri is excellent, and it is a great vegetable mini-cleaver. The nakiri lends itself to a slightly forward stroke when slicing and chopping, and it works fine. The price is way out of line on the low side compared with other Katana knives. I have been buying and using them on a piecemeal basis, and I really like each knife I have bought with the exception of the serrated slicing knife. For some reason, it seemed to shred delicate items rather than saw cleanly. I returned it. The first one I got was the 6" chef's knife, and it has been one of the best short chef knives I have ever used. It has maintained its very sharp edge for well over a year, and, again, not a hint of rust problems. Other than the serrated knife, I would recommend any of those I have bought and used, including the 8" chef knife, the 3.5" paring knife, the 9" bread knife, and the 5.5 inch honesuki.

Its a heavy but very versatile knife that possess amazing sharpness and balance that comes in very useful for just about any task from cutting up whole poultry to chopping up vegetables. Calphalon Forged Santoku Knife Review

(More customer reviews)I always just used the flimsy cheap 5" knives that were given to us prior to this purchase.This was my first "nice" piece of cutlery.The difference is amazing.Chopping vegetables takes half the time that it used to with the cheaper knives.I particularly like the heavier feel of the santoku over other specialty knives I have used in the past.If you are looking for a general purpose knife to handle your daily chopping needs, I would highly recommend purchasing this.

I use about a four pound rump roast to make chili (eight quarts also with three pounds of ground beef and one pound of sausage) and it usually takes me quite a bit of time to trim the fat and dice the meat into small pieces. I used both the fillet and boning knives, and it was so much more easier and effortless that I enjoyed doing it, it took a lot less time than using my old knives. I'll never buy another cheap knife again.

NOTE: Amazon has this set incorrectly listed as "Twin Four Star 2-Piece", it should be "Henckel Four Star 2-Piece" set, not Twin.

(More customer reviews)I've had these knives 3 months now and use it daily as I cook a lot at home. They are very sharp and quite heavy though well balanced. Someone with a smaller hand or less beefy arms might find them a tad too big and heavy and might want to look at Global knives. However, these have been great for me and the missus making light work of cutting roast, vegetable etc. A sharp set of knives is a must and these will last a lifetime.

The funny little curved bladed one looked to be possibly not that useful, but turned out to be the best knife we have and use. The curved thin tip is just perfect for coring apples and such. I always buy brand-name (read "expensive") cutlery because cheap knives are hard to use, don't hold an edge, and can be down-right dangerous. All of my knives are made by Henckels and I wouldn't use any other. You definitely get what you pay for and since my kitchen tools are used a lot and are going to be around a long time, I only buy the best. And these little knives are the best.

The Ergonomic, polypropylene handles feel good and well proportioned to my hand.The blades are sharp and have done a good job at staying sharp.

* 5 inch - Santoku Knife

Great chopping knife for mincing, slicing and cutting through bones like nothing.I use this as an all purpose knife.I'm thinking about buying another because I love it so much. I have used the santoku knife to cut through raw chicken bone like it's nothing. Even after a good deal of abuse, the blade of the santoku knife is a little chipped and worn but still does an amazing job of cutting.

* 8-inch chef's knife

I use it to cut through large heads of vegetables. It long enough to cut through a cabbage head easily and with little effort. Can slice a tomato easily without squishing it.

* 5-inch serrated utility

Great for cutting through bread and hard crust.

* 4-inch paring

Good for peeling carrots, skin of tomato and other small jobs

* 2-3/4-inch paring/boning

Good for cutting meat and meat from bones.

* Kitchen Shears

So very useful. I use it from cutting open packages to even cutting up herbs.
