(More customer reviews)I bought theese as a gift for a chef friend of mine who had eluded an interest in learning to make sushi. The knives I felt were reasonably priced to encourage learning without pressure. He absolutely loves the set, is becoming quite accomplished at sushi, and will often use the sharp blades on soft friuts he wants sliced just so. Sadly, they do not come with a way to safely store them, only a cardboard gift box. That is why I only gave it 4 stars.

Berghoff 7-Piece Forged Knife Block Review

(More customer reviews)I just got these knives yesterday, so these are mainly my initial impressions. The packaging is not that great. I don't know if most knife sets come like this, but I was a little surprised. Everything was wrapped in cheap plastic and had some manufacturing residue on it. The block had bits of glue in random spots that had to be cleaned off. I cleaned the block and washed all the knives and everything looks good. There are a few hairline scratches on one or two knives, nothing major. On each knife, it says X30Cr14 which I believe has something to do with Chromium. It also says "D10", "Rostfrei", "BergHOFF", and gives the length. I can't tell where these knives are made. I looked all over the packaging to no avail. BergHOFF is a Belgian company so take that for what it's worth. I even looked on their website and there is no real info I could find.

The knives are solid and heavy feeling. With the counter balance they are a pleasure to hold. You can hold the knife with one finger. Just put the finger on the bottom near the middle of the handle (right side up) and it will balance nicely. They come nice and sharp, but make sure you have a way to sharpen them since there is no steel. I'm not an expert on knives - so I can't tell the difference, but these are forged, not stamped. Berghoff recommends that these be hand washed. I'll update this review with cutting performance and durability later.

Overall, these are some very nice knives, and I recommend them.

The picture shows what I believed was a kudamono parer.So I was very suprised when it arrived to find a typical 4 inch parer which was exactly the same as the one I received in another set I bought. But when you read the description, it IS listed as a 4 inch parer, which is what I got.I suppose I should have paid closer attention to the details, but the picture showed what I wanted and I thought the description was just describing what was pictured.

I just wanted to write this review so no one makes the same mistake I made.The knives themselves are the best I've ever had.

I have taken a cooking class maybe half a year ago with the continuing education department of a local college. Part of the class price included a knife set. I didn't think of anything when I got it. Throughout the class I really learned the differences between cheap knifes and really good ones like this. There are more expensive knifes out there, but this knife set and Mundial generally, are a great deal for quality knifes that last. Anyways, my point is, that throughout the last half year I have not been using any of my old knifes. This knife set is all I'm using!!! It is great, safe, sharp. Great design, and user friendly with the weight relations between handle and blade. I love my knife set and would never in the world trade it is again. By the way, I can still not tell any wear and tear. Great product indeed!!!

(More customer reviews)I purchased these knives after having purchased and returned mundial steak knives that had great blades, but the black plastic handles faded after only one hand washing. These knives have serrated blades and are fine for cutting steak on a plate, and I don't think I would want steak knives to be any sharper than what these are, because if so, they would damage my dinner plates. You aren't supposed to wash them in the dishwasher, but I have several times now and they came through as good as new.The rose wood box is nothing special, but it's okay.Overall, for the price, I'm quite happy with these knives.

They will rust if water stands on them, and the handles don't respond well to the dishwasher. The blades are thick and sturdy, unlike many steak knives in this price range. Treat them right and they will last! I'd buy them again.

Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 10-Piece Knife Set with Block Review

(More customer reviews)I am writing this review to affirm and expand upon the earlier review posted by NJOY. These knives, if cleaned in a dishwasher, will indeed rust immediately.

I purchased this set in May 2007 as a gift for my wife. Both of us lead busy lives and were happy to come across this set, which was strongly recommended by Consumer Reports and had packaging touting the knives as "dishwasher safe." We sadly found the packaging claim to be a baseless marketing ploy, and have lost faith in Consumer Reports for not exposing this obvious flaw.

A complaint to Chicago Cutlery yielded a response saying the knives "are made of high carbon stainless steel which unfortunately does rust" and that "to avoid rust, the blades have to be kept well oiled." It should be noted that there are no such disclaimers or instructions in the set's included Care Guide. Also, despite the company's Lifetime Guarantee promising that "any piece found to be defective will be repaired or replaced at no charge," the company only offered to send some oil to help in rust removal.

I strongly advise against purchasing this product or any Chicago Cutlery items. Instead, find a manufacturer who stands behind their product and engages in honest marketing.
